Archangel, a sculpture by Vilém Frič made of stainless steel and rose quartz

The One Who Watches

Vilém Frič repeatedly returns to the theme of angels as one of the main motifs in his work. In Archangel, he elevates it to the concept of a being with a higher mission – a guardian who watches over. The figure’s more pronounced, almost ceremonial form corresponds to the significance of an archangel as a ‘chief angel.’ Rose quartz, traditionally associated with love and emotional balance, brings tranquility and gentleness to the piece. Protection here is therefore not a force, but a fusion of dignity, vigilance, and compassion.

The story continues

Vilém Frič repeatedly revisits the motif of the angel; not as a single, fixed figure, but as a theme of protection, hope, and human presence.

The Archangel stands out from this lineage with its dignity. The word archangel itself comes from the Greek archangelos – ‘chief angel.’ However, Christian tradition knows multiple hierarchical systems; in Pseudo-Dionysius’s nine choirs, archangels are part of the third triad. Nevertheless, the significance of Michael and Gabriel in tradition and art lends them extraordinary authority and ceremonial iconography.

The artist translates this distinction not into historical costume, but into the character of the sculpture: the figure is richer, more expansive, and more expressive. The rose quartz at its base is not a random stone. Mineralogically, it is a pink variety of quartz; in cultural tradition, it is known as the ‘stone of love’ and is associated with emotional balance. Its soft color and natural mass balance the luster of the stainless steel, giving protection a different meaning – not authority based on strength, but vigilance combined with closeness, compassion, and tranquility.

Artist's original

Each work is created through the artist's personal and direct work with the material—from the initial search for form to the final surface treatment.

Archangel is created through Vilém Frič’s direct artistic work with the material – from finding the basic silhouette to the final processing of polished and structured surfaces. The work is neither cast nor mechanically replicated. Handcrafting gives each piece its own character, subtle differences, and a unique relationship to light and the surrounding space.
